In its unceasing search to achieve and
maintain excellence, VCMS has been a part of many prestigious projects and
has been the recipient of many awards and grants. The Special Education
Resource Center (SERC) has recognized VCMS as an exemplary, large, middle
school, that is committed to change. In addition the nationally
recognized Carnegie Institute partnered with us for three years. Our
school has been intensely involved with MGSSPI, a Statewide project which
focuses on curriculum development. Our Guidance Department has won
several awards, Howell Cheney Regional Vocational Teaching School Award for
outstanding service in recognizing and developing the adverse talents of its
students, Professional Recognition Certificate from the CT School Counselors
Association for School to Careers Student Program and CT State Department of
Education Bureau of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services awarded
the Outstanding Services Award for School Guidance and Counseling
Services. The CT State Department of Education recently awarded a
Celebration of Excellence developer grant for the Career to School Initiative
Program at VCMS.
At this time VCMS has been selected as a
Connecticut candidate (on our first try) in the national Blue Ribbon Schools
process, which identifies exemplary schools all around the country.
Merely being part of this process is a great honor and attests to the
exceptional nature of our school.
VCMS has forged ties with its local
community including the public library, police and fire departments, the
parks and recreation department, and local hospitals. It also has links
to civic organizations like Senior Citizens, local nursing homes, the
Community Renewal Team, Catholic Charities, and the Tri-Town Pantry.
Additionally our school has many ties to the business community but the most
notable are with the McDonald Corporation (from which we received $20,000 to
establish a media center in our library), and Rockville Savings Bank which
establishes a personal savings account of ten dollars for all graduating
eighth graders. Our affiliations at the state level include Girls
Scouts of America, the YMCA, the Department of Children and Family Services,
and even the Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
VCMS sees itself as an active part of many
communities and we take our role in these communities very seriously.
Each enriches the academic and social consciousness of our students and helps
us develop the whole child.
