Text Box: Be the Best that You Can Be

Greetings,

I am the principal of Center Road School, Mary Jo Myslinski.  I feel lucky to be part of this wonderful school community, which includes the students, staff, and parents.

Center Road School is the largest elementary school in the town of Vernon.  Built in 1969, this Pre-K through grade five school houses a diverse student population of approximately 480 students and a dedicated staff consisting of nearly 100 teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff, and ancillary personnel.  Since Center Road School sits in the center of Vernon, we draw students from all parts of this economically diverse town.  Due to the combined efforts of the staff, students, and parents, our children have ongoing opportunities to learn about, appreciate, and enjoy the special qualities of people from a variety of racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.

Center Road School hosts a number of programs for the town.  We have a K-5 ESL program,  a preschool program, and a learning center for students with autism.  We also offer school based programs for our students including Word Masters, Invention Convention, Math Olympiads, accelerated math, and accelerated reader.  Extra curricular activities include safety patrol, service club, recess jogging club, school newspaper, yearbook, chorus, and band.  Several after school intramural sessions are offered including soccer, softball, and basketball.

All classrooms, Pre-K through grade five, have updated computers and internet access to allow for the integration of technology into the daily curriculum.  A computer lab is also available for whole class use.

Our PTO is active.  Many enrichment programs, field trips for every grade level, an at home reading program, and several family events are sponsored by our PTO.

We like to think of Center Road School has an integral part of the community.  Our grounds and our building provide playing fields and space for town league sports activities and scout troops as well as adult education classes.  Having recently been awarded a grant from the Greater Hartford Jaycees, we are planning the addition of a low elements challenge course to our campus.  Rockville Bank is our business partner and offers our students a banking program.  Yearly, they provide each family a magnetic school calendar that highlights important school dates.

A character education program that includes an anti-bullying component, Second Step, is taught across grade levels.  Through this program we encourage community service on the part of all of our students.  We’ve developed a tradition of contributing annually to several local charities.  We strive to live up to our motto, “Be The Best That You Can Be”!

I think I speak for our entire school community when I say Center Road School is a great place to be.
